Nigeria's fashionistas upset by falling oil prices

The drop in world oil prices is hitting the fashion- conscious women of Kano hard.

The city in Nigeria's far north is a long way from the oilfields of the south but that has not cushioned it from the fall in the country's main source of income.
"I came to buy a dress," says Halima Sani, a civil servant who drops into a boutique late one afternoon.
"If you could buy two or three formerly, now you cannot even afford one."
The prices at Alhayat Global Synergy women's fashion house in the Sky Memorial Complex have gone up because the Nigerian currency, the naira, has lost 20% of its value in the last three months, as a consequence
of the oil crisis. Ms Sani, wearing a print outfit with matching head wrap, has come to pay the balance on the dress she had previously chosen. Halima Sani is a regular at Alhayat Global Synergy.but says she is not a shopacholic When she first went to the shop, she thought she had.enough money, only to find the price had increased. "So I needed to go and come back today with the extra money - about 8,000 naira ($40; £26) - it's on the high
side," she says. She admits she is a regular at the shop but stops short of calling herself a shopaholic: "These days you need to get things for your home before thinking of clothes."

Bitter complaints
The boutique's owner, Aminu Tanko Kyaure, caters for the city's middle-class fashionistas, importing most of his products from Dubai.
The rolls of material, lace, dresses, jackets, handbags,.shoes and jewellery come in containers that take 45 days to arrive from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). "Before the naira fell, Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), we were making very good business," he says. But now the shipping costs from the UAE to Lagos and
then 995km (618 miles) by road to Kano have shot up. "They [the customers] bitterly complain about the prices because last week I bought new products and I had to increase them because I had to include the expenses."
Alhayat Global Synergy is especially busy in the late afternoon when the heat of the day eases
He says he is considering cancelling his forthcoming trip to Dubai because of the currency fluctuations.
Bintu Usman, who owns the Peep and Shop on nearby Maiduguri Road, says she has done just that. "I usually travel to Dubai and India but I'm unable to travel because of the high dollar -business is down," she says.."I don't have much stock now as I was unable to travel- for the past three months I have not travelled."
She used to go every six weeks or two months to stock up on clothes, bag and shoes. Her customers are also unhappy about the escalating prices. "It's really affecting the business because even right now people aren't coming for the products. "Something like a bag you were selling at 8,000 naira before is now 12,000 - they can't afford it," she says.

Online disappointment

Mr Kyaure says he could order his goods online, which would cut out some of the cost being passed onto the customer. However, he says it is not an ideal solution. Aminu Tanko Kyaure says the government needs to diversify so it is not so dependent on revenues from oil. "At times you need to go and feel and touch what you want - it will enable you to know the quality of products you want to buy, because at times when you buy online, when the goods arrive you are disappointed." As the heat goes out of the afternoon, the small shop
fills up with more women chatting and trying on different glamorous outfits.
Nigeria's government receives more than 75% of its revenues from oil exports - and in the last six months prices on global markets have more than halved.
"My suggestion to government is that it needs to diversify its source of income and do away with a monoculture economy," says Mr Kyaure before answering a query about a price. Most of the clothes at Alhayat Global Synergy are
shipped in from Dubai Imported bags have also been big sellers "It affects the entire society because we solely rely on oil and a slight change of oil price on the international market invariably affects society." Sadiqa Yakub, a microbiology student, agrees as she arrives with a friend to join the browsing customers.
"I'm finding it very difficult," she says. "For example, yesterday I went to the market to buy a chicken - before, it was about 700 naira and now it's 1200 naira.
"We haven't come here for quite a while," she admits, though she would love to get some new shoes. "Your budget has to be scheduled again. You have to come up with another plan to manage." On the fashion front, the devaluation of the naira means you sometimes have to make do with second best, she says.
And for the fashionable shoppers of Kano, second best is just not good enough. BBC.

So how has the fall in naira affected you as a fashionista? Mind to share?

KELLY OSBOURNE IS LEAVING E!'S FASHION POLICE

This is bad news for me. I think Osbourne was the best analyst after the late Joan Rivers, her departure could spell doom for the show. Read the statement released by E! Network on Friday confirming her departure.

“Kelly Osbourne is departing E!s Fashion Police to pursue other opportunities, and we would like to thank her for her many contributions to the series over the past five years, during which time the show became a hit with viewers. Fashion Police will return, as.scheduled, on Friday, March 30th at 9:00 p.m. and no decisions have been made on her replacement,” the network said in a statement.
This announcement comes days after comments were made by Osbourne’s Fashion Police co-star Giuliana Rancic regarding singer and actress Zendaya’s dreadlocked hair at the Sunday night Oscars. On Monday night’s episode of Fashion Police , Rancic said, “I feel like she smells like patchouli oil and weed,”
about Zendaya’s hair. Osbourne reacted strongly to the comment on social media by tweeting that she might leave the show
because of it and I think she finally made up her mind.

I will miss her on Fashion Police, what about you?

Eyes-Piration- Fake Lashes Are Bad For Your Eye Health According To Science

Bad news for fake lashes lovers. First time I fixed fake lashes, dear CT hated it and directed its removal ASAP, how I go do now, I no get choice, so I didnt only get the fake lashes removed, I bade it goodbye forever. I recently heard this hilarious story about a bride who was shedding serious tears on her wedding day, ruining her make up and ofcourse her wedding all thanks to fake lashes, LMAO! If you love fake eye lashes, you will definitely think again after reading today's Eyes-piration.

According to recent research, Your eyelashes grow to just the right length to serve their biological purpose (yes, there is one), and fake eyelashes may actually damage your eyesight. The pitfalls of adhesives and all the other stuff used to keep the things on your actual eye aside, forego the lashes themselves in favor of a more natural look and a significantly less arduous beauty routine (thanks, science).

According to a group of researchers led by David Hu at the Georgia Institute of Technology, in “a wide variety of mammals, eyelashes are always about one-third as long as the eye is wide, which, it turns out, is the ideal length for diverting airflow around the eye and reducing evaporation,” reports the New York Times. Also, they help keep gross airborne particles like dust from getting in your eye, and longer lashes may help filter that stuff directly to your eyeball (eesh).

Using an artificial rendering of shorter and longer eyelashes and a small wind-tunnel, researchers deduced that fake lashes — which artificially lengthen your lash-length — have a difficult time fulfilling their evolutionary purpose. “Our study demonstrates that eyelashes divert airflows, acting as a passive dust controlling system for the eyes,” says the study. “They reduce evaporation and particle deposition up to 50%, indicating the evolution of eyelashes may have played a role in reducing the frequency of endogenous blinks, which replenish and clean the tear film.”

Sorry babes..

Kanye West Bizzare Fashion Collection- See the Pics

Am not a fan of criticism but sometimes i just can't help it. When Kanye West debuted his latest fashion collection at the New York Fashion Week, i was like TF? I felt vindicated when the collection started receiving bad reviews from the professionals in the fashion industry. Well, view the pictures and judge for yourself. He's best as a rapper but not 'there' yet as a fashion designer, my two cents.

Would you wear this?

I think Kanye should stick to rap music, what do you think?

Nails-Piration - Best Ways to File your Nails

Your nails beautify your hands and the way you file nails will determine how beautiful your hands are. *Winks* According to wiki how these tips are your guide to achieving the best nails when you file.

Google image

  • File in one direction only. This prevents roughness and weakening of the nails.
  • Go slowly at the beginning; this ensures that the nails look even and smooth.
  • Other techniques to get that perfect set of nails include: buffing, polishing, and cuticle treatment (or cutting hangnails).
  • If you can, go to a nail salon or beauty supply store and buy salon-grade equipment. It is inexpensive and often of a higher quality.
  • If your nails are too short, you may want to try something more simple like the oval instead of square or pointed/almond.

WARNING

  • Avoid filing your nails when wet as they're more.prone to breakage.
  • Avoid filing back and forth. This can cause the nail to become torn and jagged.
  • Avoid filing too short. This can cause pain and bleeding.

Hope this was helpful.

Fashion Tips- Giuliana Rancic Has 9 Tips to Look Your Best in Jeans

Let's forgive her for insulting Zendaya's locks, come on, she has apologized right? The fashion police host has some great/helpful tips on how to rock jeans and I want to share them with you, enjoy!

1. FINDING THE PERFECT JEANS DEPENDS ON THE OCCASION AND BODY TYPE
Rancic’s best tips for finding the perfect pair
of jeans is to first find what looks best on your
body type rather than going with the trends.
Then, find which type of denim best fits the
occasion you’re dressing for.

2. DRESS UP YOUR BOYFRIEND JEANS BY WEARING PUMPS
From the Farmers Market to a night out on
the town, Rancic loves taking her boyfriend
jeans from day to night by simply throwing on
a killer pair of pumps.

3. THE GIRLFRIEND JEAN IS THE NEXT BIG TREND
For fall, Rancic is working on a new style
dubbed the “girlfriend jean,” which has a
more fitted silhouette than a boyfriend jean.

4. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BACKSIDE WHEN TRYING ON JEANS
“You have to make sure the behind looks
good,” Rancic says. She always carries a
compact mirror in her purse for this purpose.
“You’re going to be turning heads with your
front, so when you walk by, they’re going to
be checking out your back.” For an even
better trying-on experience, Rancic
recommends online shopping so you can try
jeans on in the comfort of your own home.

5. RANCIC WANTS ACID WASH JEANS TO MAKE A COMEBACK
The Fashion Police host feels a little nostalgic
remembering the acid wash jeans with lots of
pockets she wore when she was younger. “I
would love to own a pair of those [again],”
she says. “They were so crazy.”

6. BUT, SHE HOPES MOM JEANS NEVER DO
“No more mom jeans,” she says with a cringe.
“We don’t need mom jeans with [their] awful,
big, fat elastic waistbands and baggy-in-the-
butt and tight-at-the-ankle [silhouette].”

7. LOUNGEWEAR IS MEANT TO BE COMFORTABLE, BUT STILL CHIC
“It’s not really sleepwear,” Rancic says of her
lounge collection, which includes a cotton
version of her bestselling moto jacket and a
sweatsuit with a retro ‘80s vibe. “It’s for
chilling at home, but [still] being able to
quickly throw on your shoes and go out.”

8. SPRING IS ALL ABOUT SHOWING OFF YOUR LEGS
“I think that we’re going to see a lot of leg this
spring, like short, little leather skirts [and]
cute little shorts,” she says.

9. THE MENSWEAR TREND IS HERE TO STAY
“I also think the menswear trend is hot for
spring,” she adds. “It’s all about being
feminine, but having a little bit of a
menswear vibe.” Her favorite spring pairing
includes her tailored pants styled with one of
her graphic T-shirts that read, “My Other
Shirt is Couture” and “Love.”

Style Tip- How to Determine Your Face Shape

Determining your face shape is very important as it helps you select the best accessory, hair and clothing styles. Your facial shape determines a set of guidelines that will help you feel confident and look your best!

Knowing Your Face Shape Guides You to Your Best:
  • Hairstyles and haircuts
  • Sunglasses and eyewear
  • Jewelry such as earrings and necklaces
  • Necklines and print tops
  • Hats
  • Yes and even makeup techniques
Your facial shape is a super-essential aspect of looking your best because it helps you know what to look for when going shopping. You'll know what pieces accentuate your best features and how to downplay the parts you're self conscious about.

How to Determine Your Face Shape
When determining your facial shape we will need to take an objective look of your front profile.
You'll need:
  • A big mirror. Big enough to see your whole face and the area from your chest up at least 2-3 feet away from the mirror
  • Hair clips to pull hair from your face and expose your ears
  • A top that shows the full length of your neck and chest. I think it's best to do this with a low cut top or even topless. In this way, you’ll avoid fake lines that can alter your face shape (eg. Scoop necks tend to soften and make a face rounder)
  • Day light. Fake light can emphasize areas of your face and can create shadows that make your facial features smaller
Now look at your face in the mirror and measure yourself:
1. How wide is the widest point of my forehead
compared to my jawline?
2. How prominent are my cheekbones compared to my
jawline and forehead?
3. Is the widest point of my jawline wider than my
forehead?
4. How long is my face?
With the answers to these questions you'll be able to
determine the shape of your face (see face shape
overview below). A friend or relative can also be the judge.

Oval Face
The length of your face equals one half the width.
Considered ideal-because its neither to wide or long

Oblong shape
Looks like oval but has more length and less width.
You may appear gaunt. However an oblong face can apply to
all other face shape except round.

Round face
Your face shape is almost as wide as it is long.
similar to oval but shorter, often with a rounded jawline.
You probably look younger than your age.

Square face shape
Your jawline and hairline are same length.
Your face appears strong and angular

Heart face shape
Your widest at your cheeckbones with a narrow
forehead and jawline of almost equal width

Diamond face face

You are wider at the temples and forehead and narrower at the chin.
Killer check bones usually come with your face shape.

Triangular face shape
Your jawline is fuller/wider with a narrow forehead.
You have the same issue as rounds (young look)

So whats your facial shape?

Giuliana Rancic Apologizes to Zendaya, Kelly Osbourne Threatens to Leave 'Fashion Police'

I personally adore Juliana Rancic, Shes perfect at what she does, has a high fashion sense, infact, i always look forward to watching e!news so I can see her outfit. Juliana is more like a role model to me and so I was shocked beyond words could express when she said Zendaya's hair smells like weed, excuse me? Its not just an insult to the 18 year old but also to Nigerian women who love wearing locs. Meanwhile, Zendaya on Tuesday morning,  responded to Rancic's remarks via an open letter on instagram:

There is a fine line between what is funny and
disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair
at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I
was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I
was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To
say that an 18 year old young woman with locs
must smell of patchouli oil or "weed" is not only a
large stereotype but outrageously offensive.
She proceeded to list accomplished scholars,
actresses, singers, and authors who all wear the
hairstyle and suggested the co-host educate herself
before "opening your mouth".
There is already harsh criticism of African American
hair in society without the help of ignorant people
who choose to judge others based on the curl of
their hair. My wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar
red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light,
to remind people of color that our hair is good
enough. To me locs are a symbol of strength and
beauty, almost like a lion's mane.
Rancic has since issued an apology on Twitter

While Rancic says the incident taught her to be more aware of stereotypes, her fellow co-host Kelly Obsourne was "questioning" staying on Fashion Police over the drama. She tweeted out several messages defending her "friend" Zendaya before Rancic issued her second apology.

"you guys do realize that @Zendaya is my friend right? — Kelly Osbourne (@KellyOsbourne) February 24, 2015

"Im giving everyone involved 24 hours to make it right or the world will hear how I really feel.
contactually Im not allowed to speak! — Kelly Osbourne (@Kelly.

"I DID NOT MAKE THE WEED COMENT. I DO NOT
CONDONE RACISM SO AS A RSULT OF THIS IM
SEREIOULSY QUESTIONONIG STAYING ON THE SHOW! — Kelly Osbourne (@KellyOsbourne) February 24, 2015.

Kim Kardashian Reveals Her Almost $2k Makeup Routine

Wow! Talk about the price you have to pay to look beautiful! Please read.

It takes a whole lot of money to look like Kim
Kardashian.
The 34-year-old reality superstar just revealed her
everyday makeup and hair routine to Into the Gloss,
and it isn't exactly cheap. Not surprisingly, Kim uses
a variety of products to take care of her skin and
always camera-ready looks, and added all up, the
total is a whopping $1,977.75 .
Some of the more expensive products include the
$455 Guerlain Orchidée Impériale The Rich Cream
moisturizer, as well as an at-home Quasar MD Plus
LED light therapy machine ($755).
Kim is admittedly "crazy" about her lasers.
"[My dermatologist] tells me if I'm acting crazy when
I'm like, 'What laser has come out?'" she laughs. "I'm
really big on laser facials. I have this at-home LED
light therapy machine called Quasar MD Plus that I
got it for my psoriasis because I'll try anything. I
used to have it so bad on the back of my legs."

Kim reveals that her love of makeup started relatively
early -- and was actually encouraged by her late
father, Robert Kardashian.
"My dad got me makeup classes for Christmas when I
was like 14 at some Joe Blasco makeup school, and
I've worn that foundation ever since," she shares. "I
obviously love it when I get my makeup done, but I'm
pretty good at doing it myself."
She explains that she uses different makeup artists
for different looks. For example, there's a makeup
artist when she wants to look "ethnic."
"Mario [Dedivanovic] makes me look the most ethnic.
Joyce Bonelli makes me look the most glam. This one
makeup artist, Rob Scheppy, makes me feel in-
between glam and myself," she explains. "He does me
really tan -- I can't explain it. Everyone has a style,
and I like the different vibes."
Perhaps most surprisingly though, Kim says she only
washes her hair every five days.
"For my hair, I don't wash it every day," she says.
"We start out with a blowout on day one, then we go
into a messier vibe the next day, and then we flat iron
it and do a really sleek look on day three since that
requires a little oil in the hair. Day four could be a
slicked-back ponytail, and on the fifth day is when
you wash it."
"That's a little excessive, maybe," she admits.

Make Up Brush Guide

Hey beauties, raise up your hand if you dont know what a make-up brush is... I guess we all know right, and as a fashionista, having make up tools is very essential. A makeup brush is a tool used for the application of make up. Its bristles could be made out of natural or synthetic materials, while the handle is usually made out of plastic or wood. The importance of having brushes is so that when cosmetics are applied using the appropriate brush they blend better on your skin. They come in different shapes and sizes depending on the face area where make up will be applied, the cosmetic product and the wanted result. Shapes of the brushes include chiseled, straight, angular or tapered. There are five essential brushes every woman must have. See the picture below.

There are additional make up brushes that will go a long way in helping out on make up application. See the picture below.

The price of make up brushes vary depending on its quality. With #7500 and above, you can get good quality make up brushes but your nearby Aboki selling cosmetics might sell it a lot cheaper but have it at the back of your mind when buying from an Aboki that what he is selling isn't the original.

I hope this was helpful. Have a beautiful day. *Kisses

Nails-Piration- Tutorials

So I got to work today dressed like a deeper life member and with a plan in mind. As soon as my madam landed I was the first to go greet her, got down on my knees and begged in a manner I have never begged anyone before. "Please ma, forgive me". "I didnt know what I was thinking, it will never happen again". "Just look down upon me as your child and have mercy on me ma". I went on for like three solid minutes before she answered me. She asked me to rise up which I did before sternly warning me never to try that rubbish again. I promised her I won't, and she asked me to get back to work. My dearies, that's how I dodged a query that would have caused me a promotion oo. Heading to the pharmacy to get my forth injection. Yes, told y'all I was falling sick after the whole incident right, I actually did fall ill and i'm currently on malaria treatment!

But that aside, nail-piration henceforth will be tutorials. I assume it doesnt help you if you just view the pictures with no tutorial. I want to add value to your life and  that's the reason for this blog. So let's begin...
Instagram Image

Things you need
A white and black nail polish
     A razor
     A sticky tape

Instruction
Paint your toe nails all white and allow it to dry. Using a razor blade cut out 6 tiny squares out of the sticky tape(make sure to measure the length and width of your toes) before placing on top of your white painted toes. Now apply the black nail polish all over, allow to dry, gently lift up the sticky tape and you're done! Your toe nails should turn out exactly as the picture above. You can also use the same method to achieve same decoration on your fingernails!

I hope this was helpful.

Fashion Tips- What to Consider Before Selecting a Current Fashion Trend

Trends come and go but the painful truth is that not all trends fit us. One trend might look better on another person than you hence the need to look at current fashion trend with a critical eye. Therefore in selecting a trend, first determine what your personal style is and how the trend can help accentuate that. So next time something is trending, first ask yourself the following questions.

  • Does the shape on the clothing flatter your body figure, i.e, does it look good on you?
  • Does the clothing style reflect your clothing personality i.e do you wear such things or are just just trying it because its in vogue?
  • Does the color(-s) complement your skin tone? Some clothes fit dark people better than fair people and vice versa.
  • How many outfits can you create with the garment? Is the garment flexible to be multiplied into several outfits?
  • How long will this trend last? Is it worth investing in?
  • Can you still wear it in the next six months?

Having these questions at the back of your mind when selecting a trend will not only save you time but money too, by helping you select fashion trends that look good on you and are easy to make it work for you.

I know this was helpful so why not leave us a comment? You will see your comment as soon as you click on publish. *kisses*

Was the Mini-Skirt Actually Invented in Africa?

I just saw this interesting piece, please read.

Though debate over who designed the first miniskirt has raged on for decades – everyone from AndrĂ© CourrĂ©ges and John Bates to Jean Varon and Mary Quant has been accredited with it – the mainstream view cements its origins firmly in 1960s London, during Britain's Youthquake. Yet Tanisha Ford, an academic and writer for The Root , has called this belief into question in a recent article. While researching old issues of Drum – South Africa's leading black lifestyle magazine at the time, noted for its 1960s reportage of township life under apartheid – Ford discovered a series of articles that claimed the miniskirt was actually invented in Africa.

An image from a 1969 copy of The Drum. Photo: via Tanisha Ford/The Root

According to Drum, the miniskirt was part of the 'Afro look', a term coined by global style commenters to describe clothing that featured African and African- inspired prints, materials and techniques. Drum's story of the miniskirt's invention draws upon African oral cultural history from the 1970s. Interviewed
in 1971, Swazi model Felicia Mabuza claims that African women "have been wearing the self-same garb for centuries now". Mabuza went on to compare a photograph of herself with that of a another model dressed in a modern-day mini to demonstrate how the abbreviated garment had long be apart of everyday African dress.

Photo via Vintage everyday

In 1972, Drum interviewed South African-based designer Haya Rinoth who claims that miniskirts were an East African innovation, championed by "fashion- made" women in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Of course, no one can be sure of the miniskirt's true origins. As Ford points out, trends may emerge in
multiple places simultaneously, making it impossible to pinpoint an exact derivation. However, the Drum articles reveal several interesting perspectives.
Mabuza and Rinoth's stories are important because they tell an African-centred fashion history – one that's rarely heard in the West. As Ford says, "They were
using fashion to make claims of modernity in an attempt to depict the realities of African life and culture, which looked far different than the images of bare-
breasted women and men in loincloths that filled the pages of National Geographic. "The 'Afro look' was about opulence and glamour and challenged the West's widely held view of how Africans dressed. Drum headlines such as 'African Fashion Is Getting Its Own Back' and '150 Years Old ... [the Miniskirt] Is the Latest Look' spoke of South Africa's style influence and boldly inserted African voices into the global fashion conversation. African designers reclaimed ownership of the mini, in their quest to make their mark and gain visibility in the global market – much like the British designers of the day. And yet, as is the case with so many stories in histories, it is the Western folkore that seemed to have lived on. As Ford asks, "Why should we take African designers' and models' claims to the miniskirt any less seriously than we have taken the British history of the garment?" as she urges us to question the mainstream and pay heed to alternate perspectives.

Revealed: Men splash out £42 MORE on designer manbags than women do on handbags

It will come as a shock to any woman who's ever splashed out on the latest designer handbag, but men actually spend more on their 'manbags'.
A study found men shell out £106 for a bag on average – £42 more than women, who spend around £64. Manbags are most popular among younger age groups. Overall, one in ten men carries a bag most days, but this rises to a fifth among under-25s. Market researcher Mintel found men are more likely to choose bags made by luxury brands, while women tend
to look for cheaper High Street styles. While each year three fifths of women but themselves a new bag, a fifth of boyfriends or husband have bought a handbag as a present too.
Last year the handbag market grew by nearly ten per cent to £1.3 billion and is expected to reach £1.9 billion by 2019.
Senior Fashion Analyst Tamara Sender said: 'Whilst manbags in the past have been met with mockery, men have now begun to see the item as acceptable to wear most of the time and as they become accustomed to
the practicality of using a manbag they are likely to continue to use them as they age.

'Gifting is very important to the handbag market and given that men are inclined to spend more than women when buying handbags, this highlights the scope to
help men with the handbag gift buying process.
'Retailers could offer a personalised gift shopping service allowing consumers to speak to a personal shopper via an online chat who can recommend potential handbags that would suit their partner or whoever they are buying for.'
