Eyes-Piration: This Common Eyeliner Trick Could Be Messing With Your Vision

The wrong eyeliner technique won't just
make your makeup look bad or outdated. If
you line the inside of your lash line, your
makeup may wear off faster, mess with
your vision, and lead to icky eye disease,
according to a new study recently published
in the journal Eye and Contact Lens , which
was the first of its kind to track eyeliner
migration on video.

Researchers used a glittery eyeliner pencil
to apply liner either the inside or outside
the lash lines of three women on two
separate occasions. Then they watched what
happened: The eyeliner applied to the inner
lash lines wore off ASAP—up to 30 percent
more glitter moved into the eye when the
product was applied to the inner eye area
compared to makeup applied to the outer
rim. Often, inner-rim liner came off within
10 minutes of application, with almost no
product left on the lash line two hours later.
(Even though researchers examined glitter
liner, they expect similar results with solid
colors.)

Because the eyeliner particles that flake or
slide off your eyes get all up in your tear
film, the results suggest that inner-rim
lining—also known as tightlining—may be a
bad idea for people who wear contacts or
have dry or sensitive eyes—not to mention
people who'd like their makeup to last all
day.
In the best-case scenarios, the makeup may
cause discomfort, bind to your contact
lenses, or temporarily blur your vision. But
in the worst-case scenarios, it could set you
up for an eye infection. If your eyeliner
harbors bacteria, using it to line the inner
rims of your eyes could be just as bad as
shoving it into your eye. Ouch.
If you still love the look of inner-lined lids
but feel a little paranoid about this study,
save the look for special occasions. Before
you apply it, always clean the tip of the
eyeliner by sharpening it, or wiping down
the tip of the pencil or brush with a tissue
dipped in rubbing alcohol. And remember
to toss the liner in your bag for regular
touchups.[culled]

How to identify your skin type

Knowing your skin type is absolutely
necessary for 2 reasons:

1. To ensure proper care and treatment of your skin and
2. To pick up the right product for your skin

NORMAL SKIN: This is an ideal type of skin
and it is neither too oily nor dry. It is well
balanced with oil and moisture and appears healthy. The skin tone is even and pores are minimally visible.

DRY SKIN: If your skin is flaky, tight and dull, you have a dry skin. Dry skin does not retain moisture and is very fragile making it more susceptible to UV radiation and extreme weathers. The skin tone is uneven and pores are noticeable.

OILY SKIN: If your skin has large pores and
appear greasy and shiny all the time, you have an oily skin. People with oily skin generally tend to develop breakouts, pimples and black heads. The skin looks plump and the pores are large and noticeable.

COMBINATION SKIN: If you have both dry and oily areas, then you have a combination skin. The T-zone i.e. the forehead, nose and chin are oily whereas the cheeks appear to be a little dry. You have to be extra careful to manage this type of skin as treatment will differ
according to the areas of the combination
skin.

SENSITIVE SKIN: This type of skin is very
fragile. It is usually red and itchy and is
prone to irritation. Sensitive skin types
could react to products and even on
consumption of certain food and
beverages. One has to be extremely
careful while taking care of this type of
skin and should never use a product
without an expert advice.

The above gives you a basic knowledge of
different types of skin. However, I
recommend that before buying any skin
care product, please doubly ensure your
skin type with an experienced skin care
consultant or you may just end up buying a
wrong product which could damage your
skin and leave you looking around for a
dermat………
And before I end, I would also like to
mention that your skin can be affected by
your environment, products you use, your
stress levels, diet, lifestyle choices and
more. These factors can cause your skin
type to fluctuate, so keep that in mind.
Having identified the skin type, my next
series would be on skin care for each skin
type. How to handle each skin type in your
daily regime, what foods to avoid, what
weather precautions to be taken and all
such tid bits that you need to know.[Lets talk beauty and wellness ]

Hosting Wellington's first African Fashion Festival

BACK in 2008, someone complimented Ghanaian-born Pinaman Owusu-Banahene on her outfit, and asked if she had thought about a career in fashion. She hadn't, but the idea led her to create the African Fashion Festival.

She is determined to see the festival happen in
Wellington in May, after it had to be postponed for lack of funding in November. Its aim is to showcase internationally acclaimed African Designers, with all proceeds going to developing young.leaders and creative talent.
Owusu-Banahene, a senior adviser at the Ministry of Health, has locked in eight designers from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Mozambique, South Africa, Uganda, Australia and New Zealand. They include Senegalese designer Sophie Nzinga Sy, who studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York, and has shown at Paris Fashion Week. Each of the designers already give back to their communities by employing and upskilling local tailors and artisans. Owusu-Banahene says the festival will support the African community in New Zealand, but will also expose Kiwis to the breadth of culture in Africa. culled

WTF: This Plastic Surgery Makeover Show from South Korea is INSANE

Lid lifts, boob jobs, tummy tucks, the whole works!

Women with body issues in Korea are being treated to mind-blowing physical transformations on a crazy plastic surgery makeover show called 'Let Me In'. South Korea is estimated to have one of the highest rates of plastic surgery in the whole world. According to the New York Times, it has been estimated that between one-fifth and one-third of women in Seoul have had some form of plastic surgery. One poll reported by the BBC even put the figure at fifty per cent or higher for women in their twenties!

The premise of the show is, ‘ugly’ girls who have a story (bullied in school, beaten up, made fun of, husbands don’t want to have sex with them) come on this show and a panel of
plastic surgeons pick one girl out of two and give her a plastic surgery makeover. It’s like magic, these women undergo a transformation from ugly duckling to swan. See more photos.

5 Huge Mistakes People with Oily Skin Make

beauty and wellness image

No matter your skin type, you’ve probably had some issues with breakouts, moisturizing and pores. But when it comes to dealing with oily skin, you’re likely dealing.with more than a shiny nose. Oil flare-ups can lead to clogged pores and acne, especially if your cleansing habits aren’t in check. Excess oil production can be caused by a number of things from weather to stress and even your menstrual cycle. The hormone DHT triggers your glands to produce more sebum and a spike in this hormone means a slick and oily surface. But all is not lost! Stop making these five oily skin blunders and you, too, can have a fresh face.

1. Using harsh cleansers. Products like astringents and alcohol-infused cleansers can irritate the skin which can result in acne . Use a foaming gel cleanser that contains salicylic acid and make sure it is sulfate-free to avoid further irritation and dryness.

2. Not using moisturizer. We get that you probably don’t see the need to add a layer of hydration to your skin, but it’s no reason to write it off. Skin cells need water to live and stay healthy, so it’s crucial to add that hydration and remember to look for a formula that is light and non-comedogenic or oil-free.

3. Missing out on makeup. Cosmetics are fun and oily skin is no excuse to skip them. All you have to do is shop smart: Look for makeup products that are oil-free and contain salicylic acid , which helps get rid of any build-up in pores — and wash your face before bed.

4. Exfoliating too much. Physical exfoliation, like using a scrub with microbeads or using a facial brush, can be very abrasive on the skin — and doing this more than once a week will make your skin go crazy. Skip the scrubbing altogether and use a chemical exfoliant that has AHAs and BHAs for a gentle and more effective result.

5. Being afraid of oil. Not all oils are the same. Don’t be afraid of the word “oil” in some moisturizers, creams and lotions. Jojoba and argan oils are used in many products to help with nourishing benefits and are non- comedogenic, so they get a pass.

Taylor Swift's body type preferred over Kim Kardashian's, evolutionary study finds

A new study reportedly reveals a long leggy figure like Taylor Swift’s is preferred over a shorter, more compact figure like Kim Kardashian’s.

The University of New South Wales in Sydney
published their findings in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, the Daily Mail reports.
It claims almost 60,000 people – 80 percent men – from all over the world were shown computerized images of female body shapes.
The shapes were composites of 24 female 'body traits' including everything from bust size biceps. Subjects were shown the body shapes from the.side and from the front, and the faces were pixelated. Gradually, the lowest-rated body shapes were eliminated. According to the study, in each generation of body shapes, the shorter, thicker bodies were voted out, and the highest-rated body shape ultimately turned out to have long slender legs, a small behind, and a smaller chest.
“The predominant evolutionary trend, reflecting a likely major dimension of social selection operating on human female bodies, is toward greater slenderness and, particularly, narrower waists,” the study reportedly concluded.
In other words, Taylor Swift, not Kim Kardashian.

Waist Cincher Myths: The Truth Behind Before & After Waist Training Corset Results

Doing our usual Instagram hashtag search, we couldn't believe how many photos came up for #waisttrainer. The trend has caught on full force, but is it really worth the hype?

We admit it's hard not to fall into the wave of beauty hysteria. With Kim and Khloe Kardashian, along with actress Jessica Alba among the celebrities who swear by corsets and waist cinchers as the secret to their
snatched waistlines, no wonder so many women are buying them. But are we placing too much emphasis on corset training? Many experts say yes. Now if you've already invested in a corset or waist trainer, don't toss it, but by the same token don't worship it as the secret to a tinier waist either.

Francine Delgado, New York City-based certified personal trainer agrees. She explained the reality to the Daily Burn. "Since waist cinchers are made from latex, they also make you sweat -- a lot."
"When you sweat, you're shedding water weight, and that's not fat," the fitness pro revealed. "People may lose weight initially, but you would have to wear the thing forever in order to keep the weight off and to keep the shape," she said. So there's nothing wrong with rocking your corset or cincher, but don't believe the social media myth that it will truly slim you down permanently!

"People get the idea that cinchers work for waist training because they look at themselves in the mirror and they have a smaller waist, when all they've done is sweat out water weight," said Dr. Jan Schroeder, Ph.D.
and Professor of Fitness in the Department of
Kinesiology at California State University - Long Beach. "Corsets do not cause you to permanently lose fat in the midsection; they cause a redistribution of the fat and organs in the trunk," to give you an hourglass shape,"
Schroeder explained.[ fashion times]
